Lalit Modi, chairman of the Champions League Twenty20's governing council, is certain the tournament will result in the "rapid growth" of club cricket around the world.
Modi also said there was a strong chance the Champions League would be taken to non-cricket playing countries as a means to expand the game's reach and get other countries to embrace cricket.
"The Champions League has been developed to embrace club cricket all round the world," he said on the day of the tournament launch in Bangalore.
"It's a place where we can find young cricketers who then play for their national sides. The IPL is a great example of a domestic club-level tournament, and similarly nations around the world have club tournaments.
The objective here is not to make money, it is to build the game, to build club-level cricket, to find and nurture new talent. Money is not the criteria.
The objective here is that we have some of the best players around the world and we hope that in years to come the Champions League comes to symbolise what the UEFA [version] is to football.

The inaugural Champions League Twenty20 gets underway at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday with hosts and IPL runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on Cape Cobras from South Africa.

Cricket's first global inter-club tournament, it is the latest twist in a format that is only seven years but has established itself as the game's main money-spinner.

A mix of state, county, regional and franchise teams will battle it out for a US$ 6 million cash prize, with $2.5 million going to the winners.

The unpredictability of the format is enhanced by the fact that there is little history between the teams, though many of the players would be familiar to each other as team-mates at some level.

There will certainly be a lot of anticipation in Bangalore, where the game itself is to be preceded by what the organisers claim will be a lavish ceremony featuring legendary Grammy award winner Chaka Khan and British pop star Jamelia.

"It has been a while since Royal Challengers have played at home", Anil Kumble, the Bangalore captain, said. "It's almost a year now... more than a year. Everybody is looking forward to that and we will certainly take advantage of home support."

The first game of the very edition of the Champions League T20 tournament will be played at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore between the hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Cape Cobras.

This is a Group C encounter, with Otago Volts been the third side in the group.
I would have probably stuck my neck out and deemed the Cobras as favourites (11/8 at888Sport to win the game), even in this format, what with Graeme Smith leading the side.
Smith’s record as a T20 captain – and a batsman – has been excellent, and with the star-studded line-up like what the Cobras have, it may have become difficult for the opposition.
However, with fitness issues making him a non-availability for the tournament, the Royal Challengers (8/13 at Sky Bet to beat Cobras) will be my favourites to beat the Cobras.
In the absence of Smith, the Cobras will look up to Herschelle Gibbs (3/1 at Ladbrokes to become the best batsman for the Cobras) to provide them with the kind of start that could upset the calculations of the opposition bowlers.
